I want to decide which one to take:
PMI/PMP project management institute

6 Sigma

Leed Certification
I would like to know what the cost are for each of these test, how much time would be needed to take off from work, what materials would cost and any other details, how much prep. time is needed, what travel cost would be…this is actually not for me, I am doing this research for someone else so any help you give is greatly appreciated but if you don’t know & can direct me to other sides that would help also. Thank you!

Where I used to work people there were getting their LEED Certificate. I don’t believe they had to take any time off of work. Actually, work paid for them to take the test. If he’s doing this for work, he should ask them if they would pay for all or some of the money for these. That’s the best I can do, sorry.

There are three terms that I would like to introduce here.
First, lets see what Process Group is. The whole Project Management discipline is divided into five broad Process group, they are Project Initiation, Project Planning, Project Execution, Project Monitoring & Control and Project Closing.
You probably, might be aware of them as well.
When a new Project starts, its in the Project Initiation phase, from Initiation, it moves to Planning, than to Execution and Monitoring & Control and finally its closed. Project Execution and Project Monitoring & Control processes go hand in hand.
So when a new project is started i.e., initiated, all processes of Project Initiation Process Group should be applied to the Project. Similarly when the project is being closed, all Processes of Project Closing group should be applied.
Let me give you more specific example, Identify Risks is a Process of Project Planning group. So when the project is in planning phase, you must identify all the Risks of the project.
Next. Lets see what is a Knowledge Area.
As per PMBOK, There are 9 Knowledge areas. For example, Human Resource Management is one of the Knowledge areas. Knowledge area is a set of specific processes required to be performed to meet a project objective. A Knowledge area may have some processes to be done in Project Planning Process Group and some other processes to be done in Project Monitoring & Control Process Group.

For example, if you take Human Resource Management Knowledge area, Develop Human Resource Plan is processes in Project Planning Group and another process Manage Project Team is in Project Execution group.
Lastly there are 42 process areas; we have already come across two such Process areas. Develop Human Resource Plan and Manage Project Team.
If you are totally confused by now. Dont worry. This is the whole exam syllabus and there is one lesson dedicated to each of these topics!
For now, just remember that there are 5 process groups, 9 knowledge areas and 42 project management processes.

Scope defines the work for our project. That means what is in and what is out of our responsibilities. In generic terms we use requirements and scope as interchangeable words. But for me those two are sequential. Customers might be asking for many requirements but as a project manager we will derive project scope and stick to it. The scope that we agreed up on is called as Scope Baseline.

Scope knowledge area has 5 processes
-Collecting requirements
-Define Scope
-Create WBS which is work break down structure
-Verify Scope
-Control Scope
Collecting Requirements process helps project managers to define and document project requirements. And as I already mentioned this is preliminary step where we collect RAW requirements
The next process Define Scope refines already collected requirements into a Project Scope statement. Scope can be bigger and complicated document for a larger project and it is very hard to control or manage as a whole.
The 3rd process Create WBS helps project managers to break down the refined scope in to smaller manageable components. The smaller components are known as work packages. These work packages are organized into a hierarchical structure which is known as Work Breakdown Structure and in short WBS. Scope baseline is part of outputs of this Create WBS process. As I Promised Scope Baseline have 3 components in it and those are Scope statement, WBS and WBS dictionary. Just like our English language dictionary WBS dictionary explains details about WBS components. Remember bottom most part of Work breakdown structure are called as Work Packages. Underline the term packages. Which will useful when we talk about Time management process Develop activity list

All of these 3 processes are in planning group. Once project is started execution we have to manage day to day project activities which include scope management activities too. Scope Management activities include controlling unnecessary scope changes. For these activities we have 5th process Control Scope
The 4th process which we skipped just now is Verify Scope formalizes the deliverables acceptance.

For each one of these 5 processes Id suggest you to explore inputs, tools & Techniques and outputs. PMBOK guide has published Data flow diagrams in which it is clearly define process interactions. Please go through those data flow diagrams and understand those details.
In my pmp prep classes we cover those details in depth. For more details about my class please log on to my website www.certschool.com
